Privacy Policy

Last Updated:

Effective Date: August 18, 2026 Last Updated: August 18, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Chaptr Inc. ("Chaptr," "we," "us," or "our"), a Delaware corporation with a registered address c/o Corporation Service Company, 251 Little Falls Drive, Wilmington, New Castle County, DE 19808, United States, collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you use the Chaptr mobile application (the "App") and visit our website at chaptr.film (the "Site") (together, the "Service").

Chaptr is an 18+ entertainment app where you watch AI-generated cinematic series and exchange messages with AI-generated characters that continue those stories. You must be at least 18 years old to use Chaptr.

By using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Quick Summary

The full sections below are legally binding, but here are the essentials:

  • Chaptr lets you watch AI-generated cinematic series and chat with AI-generated characters. The characters are artificial intelligence, not real people.

  • Your Chaptr account is anonymous — we do not ask for your name or email address. At onboarding we collect your gender and date of birth (your date of birth is used to confirm you are 18+).

  • When you message a character, your message and recent conversation history are sent to our AI provider, OpenAI, to generate the reply. OpenAI processes this data on our behalf and is contractually prohibited from using it for its own purposes, including training its models.

  • We collect the content you send to characters, what you watch, your saved lists, your purchases, and usage analytics — described in Section 2.

  • We use advertising measurement. We work with AppsFlyer to understand which marketing campaigns bring people to Chaptr, and we share limited advertising and event data with advertising platforms including Meta and TikTok (ByteDance) to measure and improve our campaigns. On iOS, we only use the advertising identifier (IDFA) if you grant permission through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. See Sections 2.2, 4, and 11.

  • We do not sell your personal information for money. Our advertising activities may be considered "sharing" or a "sale" under some state privacy laws — you can opt out as described in Section 11.

  • You must be 18 or older. Chaptr is not intended for anyone under 18.

  • You can request deletion of your data at any time by emailing support@chaptr.film.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you provide

  • Account setup. Your Chaptr account is anonymous. We do not collect your name or email address. At onboarding we collect your gender and date of birth to confirm you are 18+ and to personalize your experience.

  • Character chat. The messages you send to AI characters and your recent conversation history.

  • Support communications. If you contact us at support@chaptr.film, we receive the information you provide.

2.2 Information collected automatically

  • Activity in the App. Which series and episodes you watch and your watch progress, your saved lists, and your interactions with characters.

  • Purchases. A record of your in-app purchases and subscription status (processed by the app stores and our purchase-management provider — see Section 4).

  • Usage analytics. Product-analytics information about how the App is used (screens viewed, features used, crashes and performance), which helps us fix bugs and improve the App.

  • Device and app identifiers. We and our advertising-measurement provider collect:

    • the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA) on iOS — only if you grant permission through Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt — and the equivalent advertising ID on Android where available;

    • the Identifier for Vendor (IDFV), which identifies your device to Chaptr's apps only;

    • an AppsFlyer ID, an identifier our attribution provider assigns to your app installation;

    • your anonymous Chaptr account identifier, which we send to AppsFlyer as a "customer user ID" so that install and in-app events can be matched to the correct account.

  • Attribution and campaign data. Information about how you found and installed Chaptr — for example, the ad, campaign, channel, or link you came from — along with install, session, and conversion events (such as completing onboarding, starting a chat, or making a purchase).

  • Technical/log data. Our infrastructure providers process limited technical data (such as IP address and device/app version) as needed to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the Service.

We do not collect precise location, and we do not access your camera, microphone, photo library, or contacts.

2.3 About your anonymous account

Because your account is anonymous, most of the information above is associated with an anonymous account identifier and device identifiers rather than with your real-world identity.

2.4 Tracking

On iOS, Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework asks whether you allow the App to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies. If you allow it, we and our advertising partners may use the IDFA to measure and optimize our advertising across other companies' apps and websites. If you decline, we do not access the IDFA, and our advertising measurement is limited to privacy-preserving and aggregated methods (such as Apple's SKAdNetwork). You can change this choice at any time in your device settings — see Section 11.

3. AI Characters and Chat

This section explains the core AI feature of Chaptr. Please read it in full.

Characters are artificial intelligence, not real people. Every reply you receive from a Chaptr character is generated automatically by an AI model. Characters are fictional, do not represent real individuals, and have no independent knowledge, feelings, or judgment. A clear notice that you are chatting with AI is shown in the messaging experience.

How your messages are processed. When you send a message to a character, your message and recent conversation history are transmitted to our third-party AI provider, OpenAI, which generates the character's reply and returns it to us. OpenAI processes this data on our behalf and is contractually prohibited from using it for its own purposes, including training its models. We do not use OpenAI for any purpose other than generating character replies.

We do not share your chat messages with advertisers. The content of your conversations with characters is never sent to AppsFlyer, Meta, TikTok, or any other advertising partner.

AI output can be wrong or inappropriate. AI-generated replies may be inaccurate, incomplete, or otherwise inappropriate, and may not reflect real facts or any person's actual views. Chaptr characters do not provide medical, legal, financial, psychological, or other professional advice, and are not a substitute for a qualified professional. If you are in crisis or someone may be in danger, contact your local emergency services; in the United States you can call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Please don't share sensitive information with characters. Do not send financial account numbers, government identifiers, passwords, precise location, or health information in messages to characters.

Safety. We use automated tools, and in some cases limited human review of flagged content, to detect prohibited content and signals that a user may be at risk, and to surface crisis-support resources where appropriate.

Automated decision-making. We do not use AI characters or other automated tools to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.

4. How We Share Information

We share information with the service providers and partners described below. We do not sell your personal information for money.

4.1 Service providers

  • OpenAI — generates character chat replies. Receives the messages you send to characters and recent conversation history; contractually prohibited from using this data for its own purposes or model training.

  • Supabase — hosting, authentication, and database/storage for your account and content.

  • Mux — video hosting and delivery for the series and episodes you watch.

  • RevenueCat — management of in-app purchases and subscriptions.

  • PostHog — product analytics (how the App is used, crash and performance data).

  • Apple App Store / Google Play — process your in-app purchases under their own terms. We receive confirmation of a transaction, not your full payment-card details.

4.2 Advertising and measurement partners

  • AppsFlyer — our mobile attribution and marketing-measurement provider. AppsFlyer receives device and advertising identifiers (including the IDFA where you have granted ATT permission, the IDFV, and the AppsFlyer ID), your anonymous Chaptr account identifier as a customer user ID, IP address, and install, session, and conversion events. AppsFlyer uses this to tell us which campaigns and channels drove installs and in-app activity.

  • Meta Platforms (Facebook, Instagram) — receives limited advertising and event data (such as installs, registrations, and purchases, together with the associated advertising identifier where available) so we can measure and optimize the performance of our advertising campaigns.

  • TikTok (ByteDance) — receives limited advertising and event data for the same purposes. In addition, where our attribution provider's advanced data-sharing setting is enabled, AppsFlyer forwards attribution data to TikTok, which TikTok may use for campaign measurement and optimization in accordance with its own terms and privacy policy.

These advertising partners may act as independent controllers of the data they receive and may combine it with other information they hold about you. Their handling of that data is governed by their own privacy policies. Our advertising partners may process data in the United States and other countries, which may include jurisdictions outside your own.

The content of your character conversations is never shared with these partners.

4.3 Other disclosures

  • Legal reasons. We may disclose information to comply with a subpoena, court order, or other legal process; to enforce our Terms of Use; to protect the rights, property, or safety of Chaptr, our users, or the public; or to address fraud, abuse, or security issues.

  • Corporate transactions. If Chaptr is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

  • With your consent. We may share information for other purposes if you give us permission.

All providers in Section 4.1 are contractually limited to using your information only on our behalf and only for the purposes we specify. The AI providers we use, and the consent we ask for before you first use the chat feature, are presented to you in the App.

5. AI Companion Disclosures (SB 243 and Similar Laws)

Because Chaptr offers AI characters capable of ongoing, human-like conversation, we provide the following in accordance with California's SB 243, New York's AI companion-model law, and similar laws:

  • AI disclosure. Chaptr's characters are artificial intelligence and not human. This is disclosed clearly in the messaging experience, both when you begin chatting and periodically (at least every three hours) during extended sessions.

  • Suitability. Companion-style AI may not be suitable for everyone. Chaptr is an 18+ service and is not intended for minors.

  • Responsible design. We take reasonable steps to avoid manipulative, engagement-maximizing design, including delivering rewards at unpredictable intervals intended to drive compulsive use.

  • Safety protocol. We maintain a safety protocol describing how we work to prevent characters from producing content related to suicide or self-harm, and how we surface crisis-support resources to users who appear to be at risk.

6. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide the Service — stream series and episodes, generate character replies, maintain your watch progress and saved lists, and operate your account.

  • Process purchases — facilitate in-app purchases and subscriptions.

  • Measure and improve our advertising — determine which marketing campaigns, channels, and creatives lead people to install and use Chaptr (attribution), measure conversions and campaign performance, optimize and target our advertising on platforms such as Meta and TikTok, and detect advertising fraud.

  • Improve the Service — analyze usage, fix bugs, improve performance, and improve the quality and safety of our AI features (using aggregated and de-identified data).

  • Keep the Service safe — detect prohibited content, abuse, and fraud, and operate our safety protocol (Section 3).

  • Comply with law — respond to legal obligations and process.

7. Data Retention

  • Account data (anonymous identifier, gender, date of birth) — for as long as your account is active.

  • Chat messages and conversation history — until you delete them or close your account. You can delete conversations in the App.

  • Watch progress and saved lists — until you delete them or close your account.

  • Purchase records — as required for tax and accounting purposes (up to 7 years).

  • Attribution, advertising, and analytics data — retained for a limited period consistent with our providers' standard retention periods, then aggregated or deleted.

  • Technical logs — retained for a limited period for security and debugging, then aggregated or deleted.

  • Backups — purged on a rolling 90-day cycle.

After account deletion, we may retain aggregated or de-identified data that cannot be linked back to you.

8. Security

We use commercially reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect information, including encryption in transit (TLS), access controls, and reputable infrastructure providers. No system is perfectly secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us at support@chaptr.film.

9. Age Requirement

Chaptr is strictly for adults 18 and older. We ask for your date of birth at onboarding and do not permit accounts for anyone under 18. Chaptr is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that a person under 18 has created an account, we will delete it and the associated information. If you believe someone under 18 is using Chaptr, contact us at support@chaptr.film.

10. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing. To make a request, email support@chaptr.film. Because your account is anonymous, we may ask for information (such as your anonymous account identifier) to locate your data and verify your request. We respond within the time required by applicable law.

California. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) applies to businesses that meet certain thresholds. To the extent it applies to Chaptr, California residents have the rights described above, plus the right to be free from discrimination for exercising them. We do not sell your personal information for monetary consideration. However, our advertising measurement — including sharing advertising identifiers and event data with Meta and TikTok as described in Section 4.2 — may constitute "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising under the CCPA, and may be treated as a "sale" or "targeted advertising" under other state privacy laws. You can opt out as described in Section 11. We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals on our website. We do not process biometric information.

EU / UK / EEA. If the EU or UK GDPR applies to our processing, the controller is Chaptr Inc. at the address above. Our lawful bases are contract performance (providing the Service), consent (for the AI chat feature, and for advertising and measurement involving device identifiers), legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention, and product improvement), and legal obligation. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection, including the right to object to processing for direct marketing, and you may lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority. Where we transfer data internationally, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses. You can contact us about any of this at support@chaptr.film.

11. Your Advertising Choices

You have several ways to limit advertising-related processing:

  • iOS (App Tracking Transparency). Decline the tracking prompt, or change your choice at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. If you decline, we do not access your IDFA. You can also disable tracking for all apps from that screen.

  • Android. You can delete or reset your advertising ID, or opt out of ads personalization, in Settings → Privacy → Ads.

  • Ask us directly. Email support@chaptr.film to opt out of the sharing of your information for advertising purposes, and we will apply the opt-out to your account.

  • Global Privacy Control. Our website honors GPC signals where applicable.

  • Advertising platforms. You can also adjust ad-personalization settings directly with Meta and TikTok through your accounts on those platforms.

Opting out of advertising measurement does not stop you from using Chaptr, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising this choice.

12. Cookies (Website)

The App does not use cookies. Our website at chaptr.film uses only essential cookies needed to operate the Site. We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals where applicable.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated by in-app notice or a prominent notice on the Site at least 30 days before they take effect. The "Last Updated" date above reflects the most recent version.
